Each month we receive hundreds of emails from our customers telling us how they use their magnets. We thought we would showcase some of these here for your inspiration:
“The biggest danger comes from two magnets spaced apart which as they move closer, can suddenly leap together with extreme speed and force.”
Magnet Expert Ltd does not accept responsibility for damage that has been caused by the improper handling of magnets. With the purchase of any magnets from our website, you confirm that you have read and understood the following warnings. A health and safety warning sheet is supplied with all orders, so if you are giving magnets as a gift, please be sure to include the information sheet in the package. Ensure that children under 10 are not allowed to play with magnets and children over 10 are told about the potential dangers of the magnets and supervised by an adult who has read and understood these warnings.
The most common cause of broken magnets is when two magnets are released and allowed to collide together. A combination of massive acceleration and high forces will cause one or both magnets to chip or shatter. Please do not allow this to happen and then try to return them to us as 'broken in the post'.
The chips are usually magnetically pulled back by the main magnets but it is conceivable that they may fly off at high speed into someone's eye. Eye protection is therefore advised. Chips and broken magnets are quite sharp, so cuts are possible as with broken glass.
Ensure that children are not allowed to play with magnets. Fingers can be crushed between the powerful magnets. If more than one small magnet is swallowed, they could attract each other through the walls of the intestines, this would cause major swelling, life-threatening injuries and need surgery to remove them. If they place them onto a CRT television screen or CRT computer monitor screen, permanent damage can occur as colors will become permanently distorted.
When larger magnets are brought close enough together they can have a surprising amount of power. The risks involved are directly proportional to the size (volume) of the magnet and the power grade of the magnet.
1cm3+ = risk of nipping 4cm3+ = risk of blood blister 10cm3+ = risk of cuts 30cm3+ = risk of crushing finger tips
Fingers are quickly caught between them which can cause blood blisters, cuts or crushing depending on the size of the magnet. Wear gloves when handling larger magnets and use caution. Practice handling smaller magnets first.
These magnets can jump through very large distances, the biggest danger comes from two magnets spaced apart which as they move closer, can suddenly leap together with extreme speed and force. If you have a magnet in your hand and another is placed on your desk and you accidentally come within the magnetic range of up to 300mm, the one on the desk will leap and accelerate with considerable force which on impact will cause bruising, blood blisters, cuts or crushing. Always consider the magnetic implications of where you place magnets. They are safest inside tough plastic storage boxes.
Do not place these magnets up your nose or around the ears as the soft tissue will easily compress as the magnets attract each other through the thickness of the tissue and as the magnets get closer to each other, they will then exert more force, resulting in crushing and lots of pain.
