{"id":1113,"date":"2021-05-13T09:51:15","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T09:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.first4magnets.com\/news\/?p=1113"},"modified":"2024-09-26T09:14:14","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T09:14:14","slug":"a-new-way-to-recover-rare-earth-magnets-from-electric-motors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.first4magnets.com\/blog\/a-new-way-to-recover-rare-earth-magnets-from-electric-motors\/","title":{"rendered":"A new way to recover rare earth magnets from electric motors?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rare-earth magnets are commonly used in electric cars motors, but nearly none of these motors are recycled &#8211; this is similar for the motors in computer hard drives, domestic appliances, and cordless tools, which all also contain rare-earth magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their name, not all rare-earth magnets are rare, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.first4magnets.com\/neodymium-t137\">Neodymium<\/a> is extremely popular and used commonly, but recycling these from motors can prove difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;The typical process of shredding and separating applied to electronic waste makes the recovery of rare earths difficult&#8221;, says Allan Walton, the leader of the Magnetic Materials Group at the University of Birmingham, UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rare-earth magnets are brittle and can break into particles which oxidise promptly, leaving an almost worthless pile of residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the team from the University of Birmingham hope to change this process in order to be able to recycle Neodymium, the rare-earth magnet most commonly used in electric motors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process will see all components containing Neodymium-based magnets which are destined to be destroyed placed into a container, which is then pumped with Hydrogen. The reaction between the Hydrogen and Neodymium results in the magnets expanding, leaving behind a demagnetised powder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the powder has been tumbled and sieved and the Hydrogen has been removed, the extracted powder can be processed straight back into magnets and can even require 15% less energy to make than equivalent products, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/hypromag.com\/\">Hypromag<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-text-color\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.first4magnets.com\/neodymium-t137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.first4magnets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/15mm-dia-x-4mm-thick-n35-neodymium-magnet-2-8kg-pull-p2551-23158_image-700x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1117\" width=\"350\" height=\"300\"\/><\/a><figcaption> <br>15mm dia x 4mm thick N35 Neodymium Magnet <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to help commercialise this project, Hypromag has\npartnered with Bentley, who have begun to develop their range of electric\nmodels.
