Samarium cobalt is a type of rare-earth magnet that has the ability to withstand and operate in high temperatures, however they are not as powerful as super-strong Neodymium magnets. Because of their high maximum operating temperature they are commonly used in applications such as motors and electric motors, turbo machinery and sensors.

Unusually, diametrically magnetised magnets are not designed to hold the maximum possible weight for the size of the magnet but instead are used to provide rotational movement. A diametrically magnetised magnet is magnetised across its diameter so that the north pole in on one curved side and the south pole is on the opposite curved side. Within motors, diametrically magnetised magnets are commonly used on the end of shafts to provide drive. They can also be used to produce a magnetic rack and pinion system by using a line of north and south in alternating polarities. It is also possible to use diametrically magnetised magnets for reed switch applications.
